BRANSFORD - Oct 18

Over the last few years Kilgetty Golf Society has been extremely lucky when it comes to the clouds dissipating sometimes minutes before we were due to tee off on our monthly meetings, leaving us counting our blessings. Not so this October due to storm Callum. Leaving a sodden Pembrokeshire and travelling through a post apocalyptic Carmarthenshire and Glamorgan with its floods and land slips we arrived in Worcestershire to the rain we thought we had just seen the last of at home! After bacon rolls, coffee and beer for some, twenty nine of us decided to wait until the rain eased before going out, although some brave souls forged ahead whilst two went shopping in Worcester! Eventually many ventured out and were well rewarded by mild and eventually dry conditions on what turned out to be a short but decidedly tricky and interesting course laced with too many lakes and ponds to count, albeit one of the lakes was on the 14th green!

Once in the dry of the excellent hotel at Bransford only 150 yards away, we revelled in the plush surroundings and commodious bedrooms, thoroughly enjoyed the evening meal and raffle, and were entertained by Darrell Chalky Willington's quiz in the Sportsman's Bar. As this provided the only full competition of the two days I shall give the result here: 1st "Tiddly Eyeties" with 78 points (well they were tiddly by the end of the evening), 2nd "Pemfloyne" 60, 3rd "No Hopers" 55, followed by the "The Incredibles" with 49, the not so "Wise Guys" 43, and "Anything U Like" 42.5.

We awoke in the morning to guess what? Rain, and an apologetic Golf Professional who told us the course had been closed. With a promise of a future free round we were unanimous that Bransford Golf Club and Bank House Hotel were worthy of a second visit next summer, so watch this space. Leaving Worcestershire in driving rain we were perplexed to arrive in a sunny Pembrokeshire! Perhaps the Gods have now taken sufficient revenge on us to grant us another couple of years of good luck.
