Pontardawe -July 16

Darrell Chalks up another win.

Last Wednesday 24 Kilgetty Society golfers ascended the hills of the Tawe Valley to the delightful Pontardawe Golf Club for the Society’s first visit there. Not that it will be our last, as praise for the course was almost unanimous. We received a warm welcome and the 360 degree views from the top of the course were spectacular.

Going off in 3’s, first out the blocks were Darrell Chalky Willington, Barry Nippy Neale, and Perry Bonzo Phillips and what a driving display they gave with Bonzo winning the longest drive prize and Chalky setting a points total of 36 which was only matched much later on by Keith Director Leverton.

Hard on their heels came Alun Wanderer Williams, John Dynamo Richards, and Graham Victor Longster but try as they may they couldn’t quite match Chalky’s effort. However their combined points total of 101 was good enough by 5 clear points to win the Team award. Victor also managed a 2 and won Nearest the Pin on the 5th hole.

Next off were Mike Slippery Skidmore, Steve Gizmo Jones , and Anthony Wiseguy Ryan. Wiseguy played to his 28 handicap and won the 20+ handicap prize, but Slippery hit his namesake slope, whilst Gizmo played poorly except for a hot patch of 3 consecutive pars in the middle of his round.

Paul Goodbye Marsden, Steve Eleanor Rigby, and Rob The Builder Nixon followed but they failed to reach any heights other than the top of the course!

Wayne Gipsy Connett, Martin FCUK Davies, and Joe Lofty Braithwaite fared even worse, plunging from previous heights to the depths of despair (or the 16th fairway if you know the course). The Gypsy’s score was amplified greatly however by a 2.

Could Adrian 999 Alman, Barry Chippy Wood, and Dave Smiler Green fare any better? No. Smiler got bogged down and Chippy blamed the divots for an average round except for a cracking 2 on the difficult 10th.

So 2 left. Would Chalky be caught? Well, the 7th team of Roger Analyst Handcock, Allan Snuff Gawith, and Bob Dixie Forrest tried hard but ultimately failed, although dear old Dixie accumulated 35 points to finish in 3rd place on countback from Victor and the Wanderer.

Down to the wire and our lowest handicapper Mike Big Box Allen accompanied by Keith Director Leverton and John Flutter Williams stood on the first tee, which is probably where Flutter should have stayed for he bludgeoned his way to the Wooden Spoon – amazingly a full 30 points less than his winning total at Derllys Court a few months ago! That is a BAD day. The Director as mentioned above came in with an excellent score which earned him second place on countback. Big Box played well but his handicap unfortunately dragged him down and left Chalky the Winner.

All this excitement and exertion proved too much for some players who had to partake of liquid refreshments afterwards, culminating in a noisy but good humoured audience for Gizmo’s presentation of the prizes.
